The Canada researchers develop a new style mobile phone which is as light and soft as the paper. The researchers think the PaperPhone is expected to lead the next generation mobile phone tendency and will be the mainstream product on the market within five to ten years.
Lightweight and thin
The paperphone is developed by the researcher of the Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada. It gains the technology support of the Ariaona State University in USA. The Human Media Lab director Roel Witt Gal will officially introduce the new phone on the Computer Human Interaction held in Vancouver.

The paperphone is as thin as the credit card. It’s less than the one-sixth of the weight of iPhone4. The display screen is about 94cm. The mobile phone uses the E-ink technology. But the touch screen is not the glass, but the super thin and flexible film. The special material is developed by the researchers of the Arizona State University. The paperphone can not only make call and send message, it can also store the e-book and play the music. It can be called as the paper computer.
Witt Gal said that the paper phone is more environment-friendly and low power-consuming. The phone will not consume power when it’s not operated. In addition, the phone is very firm.
Easy to use
Witt Gal introduced that the application programs can pop up by winding the two sides of the phone. You can realize the page navigation function by turning the top right corner. “The product is like a piece of paper of man-computer interaction on the appearance, touch feeling and using method. The user will not feel he or she is holding glass or metal.” He said.
The assistant professor of Computing, Information and Decision System Engineer Academy under the Ariaona State University Winslow Burleson takes part n the developing of the paper phone human computer interaction system. He said the researchers develop the new human and computer interactive method on the platform by the real time detecting of the dynamic input. The user can realize the function of the common phone by turning the paper.
The British newspaper Daily Mail quoted the words of Witt Gal that the paper phone can be piled or distributed on the desk like the paper. The occupancy can be controlled when display the storage data.
Tendency
Witt Gal believes that the mobile will lead the next mobile tendency. The first paper phone proves the possibility of the human and computer interaction. But it’s not the time for the commercial promotion. The price is limited factor. The price of the original product model is between seven and ten thousand dollars.
